When Joe Flick, a Milwaukee firefighter, goes out on a call these days, he may be dispatched to the home of someone suffering from Covid-19. He’s always risked his life for the community, and that’s more true than ever today. He’s been in Milwaukee most of his life, is a product of MPS, and has been with the Milwaukee Fire Department for nearly 18 years and recently got promoted to lieutenant. He also is part of the highly trained Heavy Urban Rescue Team and a philanthropist. He founded the Ignite the Spirit Fund in Milwaukee, a volunteer-run nonprofit that supports firefighters and their families in times of need. He decided to start the fund after seeing how many people turned out in the snow and cold for the funeral of a fellow firefighter. It was clear people cared and wanted to help those who serve us all. The group holds a variety of fundraisers, including the popular Milwaukee Heroes calendar, which features rescue dogs this year.
